New Zealand flour manufacturer Champion Flour Milling has made New Zealand history, announcing the hiring of Huzeinat Shidi, the first female miller in the country’s history.

Emigrating from Nigeria, where Shidi was also the West African country’s first female miller, she brings a wealth of knowledge to Champion’s Mount Maunganui site.

“I am so grateful to have joined the Champion team here in New Zealand. Champion excels in baking the future from flour all thanks to its diverse and expert team. It is wonderful to witness the gender diversity across the site from female assistants in milling, to women operating forklift drivers and I am excited about my career her,” says Shidi.

Having graduated from the prestigious Swiss Milling School, renowned for its world-class grain milling training in Switzerland, Shidi will have a leading role in ensuring Champion continues to meet the needs of customers and consumers with world-leading grain to table solutions.

“Huzeinat is an exceptional and passionate miller who is a positive addition to the Champion team. At Champion, we develop ourselves, peers, and teams to be better every day which Huzeinat encompasses. As the first female miller in New Zealand, Huzeinat has established herself as a milling expert, and brilliant mentor. She has a bright future ahead of her at Champion where we value diversity and inclusion, and we are honoured to be a part of it,” says Champion Flour Milling, country manager Chris Anderson.

The milling industry is a vibrant sector that combines traditional skills with modern technology to produce a wide range of flours. Milling is one of the oldest trades in the world with wheat being one of the most important crops across New Zealand.
